Web is growing everyday, try to avoid web Mistakes; Here is one, you should not annoy your users by opening a new browser window if the user clicks a link.
I confess that I used to do that mistake. Now I stopped it. Reason is simple; users will get annoyed with multiple windows. User knows that they are clicking a link and they are going to visit another page or site; they are the one who requested this action. Don’t try trick the users by keeping your site around the browser.
Don’t use: target = “_blank” or target = “_new” unless you have specific reason. Many sites do so. There should be very good reason to open new browser window.
According to a survey “back button” feature in your browser is the second most used navigation function (after hyperlinks). If you open a new window, it means you are resetting that option and user may not return to your site again.
If the user has Internet Explore 6 or older, new window will span into multiple instances, which will slow the computer. Also, if the user computer is low on memory, the new browser window can cause a browser crash or system crash.
So, if you want to link a site, just link it. Don’t try trick the users by keeping your site around the browser. If they want they will come back to your site again.
