CryptoLocker is a ransomware (malware) which typically spread through spammed-out email attachments (emails that seem to be from banks and other financial institutions). If you click on the attached file, your computer becomes infected. CryptoLocker targets computers running Microsoft Windows.
Cryptolocker will encrypt files including MS Word and Excel, PDF files and will restrict access to the computer system that it infects. CryptoLocker will need ransom paid to the creator of the malware to receive a key that unlock their encrypted files.
How to protect against CryptoLocker?
- Never open or download an attachment from unknown sources.
- Never click on unknown links
- Update Antivirus software and keep it up-to-date
