Ransomware is a type of malware that holds your computer hostage by locking files or systems screen and demands payment (like CryptoLocker Ransomware) to unlock the access. It can be downloaded while visiting a malicious or compromised websites, it can also downloaded by clicking a malicious email attachment.
Recently WanaCrypt0r 2.0, WannaCry or WCry ransomware infections is hitting all industries around the world in very large-scale which runs older Windows system like Windows XP, Windows Server 2003 and Windows 8.
Here are the steps to prevent a Ransomware
Regularly update software with latest security updates – Regularly update your system software using Windows Update or Software Update feature on a Mac which often has patch for the latest vulnerability.
Backup your important files – Backup your important files to an external hard drive or store it in a cloud-based storage service like Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive. etc.
Install anti-virus software and keep it up to date – Use anti-virus software to protect your computer by blocking malicious websites, emails, and files associated with the threat.
Avoid opening unverified emails – Never open or download an attachment from unknown sources
