- .gz is the extension for gzip files (GNU zip, an open source file compression program)
- .tar is file format (in the form of a type of archive bitstream), name was derive from “tape archiver”. TAR is not a compression file type
- .tar.gz compressed tar file
You can extract/ uncompress .gz , .tar or .tar.gz files using Winzip utility or freeware like 7-zip
