General Motors’s largest test fleet of hydrogen-powered Equinox Fuel Cell SUVs is called Project Driveway..

“Project Driveway” is the first large-scale market test of fuel cell vehicles with real drivers in the real world. Equinox Fuel Cell is an electric vehicle powered by the GM fourth-generation fuel cell system, advanced fuel cell propulsion system to date. The electric motor traction system will provide the vehicle with instantaneous torque, smooth acceleration, and quiet performance.

Equinox Fuel Cell crossovers to customers in the New York City, Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. areas. Families will have vehicles for three months and won’t be charged for the use of the vehicles or the fuel but will have to provide feedback on their experiences.

American Wind Energy Association welcomes T. Boone Pickens campaign

The American Wind Energy Association welcomed the campaign launched by T. Boone Pickens to strengthen U.S. economic and energy security by boosting wind power production.

U.S. Department of Energy, in a major technical report, confirmed that wind can generate 20% of U.S. electricity supply by 2030 while providing benefits that far outweigh the cost.

According to the DOE technical report, achieving a 20% wind contribution to U.S. electricity supply by 2030 would:

* Reduce carbon dioxide emissions from electricity generation by 25% in 2030;
* Reduce natural gas use by 11%, which would in turn lower the pressure on natural gas prices;
* Support roughly 500,000 jobs in the U.S., with an average of more than 150,000 workers directly employed by the wind industry;
* Increase annual revenues to local communities to more than $1.5 billion by 2030; and
* Reduce water consumption associated with electricity generation by 4 trillion gallons by 2030.

All electric power for Caterpillar’s FG Wilson manufacturing plants in Northern Ireland is supplied by Airtricity, a renewable electricity that develops and owns onshore and offshore wind farms.

This is Caterpillar’s first production site to be 100 % supplied by renewable electricity. The companies say the facilities will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 11,000 tons per year.

CAT was also one of the original members of the U.S. Climate Action Partnership, a group of companies and environmental groups that have called on the federal government to enact strong legislation to regulate greenhouse gases.

Dell Receives “80 PLUS Gold” Certification

Dell has became the first in its industry to achieve 80 PLUS Gold-certification for a server power supply, the latest sign that the company is meeting its goal of becoming the “greenest” technology company on the planet and strengthening its position as an energy-efficiency leader.

The 80 PLUS Gold-certification enables manufacturers and customers to compare and contrast power supplies based on established criteria from Energy Star and the Climate Savers Computing Initiative. Dell’s new 80 PLUS Gold power supply meets July 2009 Climate Savers targets for servers more than a year ahead of schedule, which require 92 % minimum efficiency for the power supply unit at 50 percent of rated output.

Servers, personal computers and monitors account for more that 60 % of global ICT-related carbon emissions.

In May, Dell said it plans to reduce the energy consumption of its products and avoid millions of tons of CO2 emissions worldwide by designing its laptops and desktops to consume up to 25 percent less energy by 2010.
