Japan launched the first satellite to monitor greenhouse gases worldwide on January 23, 2009.
The Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite or GOSAT was developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and launched on January 23, 2009, from the Tanegashima Space Center.
GOSAT is also known as Ibuki, will be used to measure densities of carbon dioxide and methane from 56,000 locations on the Earth’s atmosphere. The GOSAT was developed by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
NASAS satellite to study global-warming gases failed to reach orbit. It crashed into the sea near Antarctica on Feb 24 2009.
The U.S. space agency says the spacecraft was designed to measure carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere. The gas has been blamed for global climate change.

Greenhouse gases naturally blanket the Earth and keep it about 33 degrees Celsius warmer than it would be without these gases in the atmosphere. This is called the Greenhouse Effect.
The greenhouse effect is important. Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would not be warm enough for humans to live. But if the greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it could make the Earth warmer than usual. Even a little extra warming may cause problems for humans, plants, and animals.
Compressed natural gas (methane) is a cleaner alternative to other automobile fuels such as gasoline (petrol) and diesel. As of 2005, the countries with the largest number of natural gas vehicles were Argentina, Brazil, Pakistan, Italy, Iran, and the USA.
Natural gas is a major source of electricity generation through the use of gas turbines and steam turbines.
