IIT-Kharagpur researchers begins herbal cancer drug development

A team of scientists, headed by Ajoy Kumar Ray, head, department of electronics and technology, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT-Kharagpur), have undertaken a research work to find herbal cure for cancer.

Scientists are trying to clone and characterise the genes involved in cancer and gather their response to certain therapies, like herbal medicine, according to Business Standard.

After IIMs, IITs propose fee hike from June

After Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) hiked fees ( IIM-B hiked fromRs 2.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh) , Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have approached the government for permission to double annual tuition fees.

“There has been a proposal to raise the fee for some time now.”, said Surendra Prasad, director, IIT Delhi, reported Business Standard.
According to report, directors of all the 7 IITs wrote to the prime minister a month ago requesting higher fees.

Currently an IIT student pays an annual fees of Rs 25,000.

Centre out with new 14 world class universities

Over the next five years, Indian Government proposed to set up 8 new Indian Institutes of Technology(IIT), 7 Indian Institutes of Management(IIM), 14 universities which aim to have world class standards, and 16 central universities in states that do not already have one.

List of State/cities which will have 14 world class universities during the 11th Plan:

  1. Maharashtra - Pune
  2. West Bengal - Kolkata
  3. Tamil Nadu - Coimbatore
  4. Karnataka - Mysore
  5. Andhra Pradesh - Vishakapatanam
  6. Gujarat - Gandhinagar
  7. Rajasthan - Jaipur
  8. Bihar - Patna
  9. Madhya Pradesh - Bhopal
  10. Kerala - Kochi
  11. Punjab - Amritsar
  12. Orissa - Bhubaneshwar
  13. Uttar Padesh - Greater Noida
  14. North Eastern Region - Guwahati

New 8 IITs, 7 IIMs location list

Indian Government announced the location of 4 new Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), 6 new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) , part of the 8 IITs and 7 IIMs proposed to be set up under the 11th Five Year Plan.

The list of states where the Centre has decided to locate these prestigious institutions was unveiled by Union minister of human resource development, Arjun Singh.

IITs, the ones that have made it to the final list are

  1. Orissa
  2. Madhya Pradesh
  3. Gujarat
  4. Punjab
  5. Andhra Pradesh
  6. Rajasthan
  7. Bihar
  8. Himachal Pradesh

IIMs, the ones that have made it to the final list are

  1. Jammu and Kashmir
  2. Tamil Nadu
  3. Jharkhand
  4. Chhattisgarh
  5. Uttarakhand
  6. Haryana
  7. Shillong
